Vaishakh Purnima 2020: Vaisakh Purnima or Buddh Purnima is an annual festival celebrated to mark the birth anniversary of Lord Buddha. The festival holds significant importance in the lives of Hindus and Buddhists. Lord Buddha has nirvana (enlightenment) on this full moon under Bodhi Tree in Bodh Gaya, Bihar over 2,500 years ago. According to Hindu Panchang, Vaishakh Purnima falls during the month of April or May.

Taking a dip in river Ganges or sprinkling Gangajal on ourselves is considered sacred. It is believed that worshiping Lord Buddha on this day frees us from sins and brings prosperity. The festival is celebrated around the world with fervour and enthusiasm. During this festival, ardent devotees of Lord Buddha observes fast, which also prevents early death. Donating clothes and food on this day is considered auspicious.

Vaishakh Purnima puja vidhi

Take bath early in the morning.

Light a lamp in the temple of the house.

Give the gods a bath and wear clean clothes.

If you fast on full moon, then take a vow of fast.

Recite Satyanarayan katha.

Worship Moon during the night. Offer Arghya to Chandra Dev.

Offer satvik food to the diety.

After offering Bhog, share it with all the family members as Prasad.

If you have any bird under a cage, set it free.

According to religious beliefs, a part of bhog should be fed to the cow.

Date: May 7

Timing: 7.44 pm on May 6 till 4.14 pm on May 7.

As per Bhagwat Puran, Mahatma Buddh was the ninth avatar of Lord Vishnu. The day is also known as Vinayak or Satya Vinayak Purnima. Vaishakh Purnima holds the highest place among all such dates dedicated to the Vishnu deity.

One should avoid tamasic foods like meat and wine on Vaisakh Purnima. People should dress themselves in white clothes and follow the teachings of Lord Buddha such as ahimsa (non-violence) and compassion.
